That’s because since 1995, to prevent vehicle theft, it’s been a legal necessity that all vehicles must have an immobiliser system fitted. Meaning an engine will only start if it recognises a unique code from a transponder chip built into its corresponding ignition key. And since car keys also allow us to remotely lock and unlock vehicles now too, that’s another factor that has to be built into the cost of a modern car key.
But your new car key needn’t be too expensive if you choose wisely. It may be an obvious first step approaching your car manufacturer’s local dealership but that is going to be the most costly option too. And what if the reason you need a new car key is because you’ve lost your only car key?
Then you have to somehow transport your car to their showroom as well, just so they can identify the code required for the new key.
